Choosing between SEO company quotes in South Africa is difficult because the documents rarely look alike. One proposal runs to forty pages, another is a single paragraph, and the totals can differ several times over. This guide gives you a method for comparing them: what to extract from each quote, how to put them on equal footing, and which signals should end the conversation.
The principle is simple. Do not compare prices. Compare scope, evidence and risk, and only then look at the price.
What should an SEO company quote contain?
A usable quote has seven parts. If one is missing, ask for it before you compare anything else.
- Diagnosis specific to your site. Real pages, real problems, ideally drawn from your Search Console data. A quote that could be sent to any business is a template.
- A list of deliverables with numbers. How many pages, articles, audits, reports and calls, and by when.
- The method for links and authority. In plain words, where links come from.
- Measurement. What will be tracked, how you will see it and how often it is explained.
- Price and term. Monthly or fixed, minimum term, notice period, and whether VAT applies.
- Ownership and access. Who owns the accounts, content and documents, and what handover looks like.
- Exclusions. What is not included, such as developer time, paid media or content production.
How do you put SEO company quotes on equal footing?
Build a simple table with one column per company and one row per item below. Fill it in from the documents, and mark any cell you cannot fill as “not stated”. The blank cells are the most useful part.
- Monthly price and minimum term
- Technical audit included? Fix list included? Who implements the fixes?
- Pages or articles per month, and word counts
- Keyword and intent research included?
- Internal linking and site structure work included?
- Link building method, and number of links promised, if any
- Structured data and AI search visibility work
- Reporting frequency, format and call schedule
- Named person responsible
- Ownership of accounts and content, notice period
Then divide. If one quote includes four articles and a technical audit for a price and another includes two articles with no audit for nearly the same, you can see the difference at once. If you need background on what a complete service covers, see our page on SEO services.
Which red flags should end the conversation?
Some signals are serious enough to stop talking.
- Guaranteed rankings or a guaranteed date. Search engines do not take instructions, so a guarantee is either false or conditional in ways hidden in the small print.
- Link packages. “50 backlinks a month” usually means low-quality placements. Search engines treat link schemes as spam.
- Vague activity. “On-page optimisation” and “content creation” with no numbers.
- A proposal before diagnosis. If nobody has asked for access or looked at your site, the document is generic.
- Control of your accounts. The company registers your analytics, domain or hosting in its own name.
- An invented AI score. Some providers sell a number for “AI visibility”. Ask how it is calculated and whether it can be reproduced. If they cannot explain it, it is decoration.
What do big gaps between SEO company quotes usually mean?
When one proposal costs two or three times another, the gap almost always comes from one of four places. The first is volume: one company includes eight articles a month and the other includes two. The second is seniority: one quote prices a senior specialist’s time, the other prices a junior working from a template. The third is the method for earning links, where cheap quotes lean on bulk packages and expensive ones fund genuine outreach. The fourth is what is left out. A low quote that excludes the audit, the reporting and the developer time you will need is not low once those are added back.
Ask each company to explain the gap between its quote and the others. A confident answer names specifics. A defensive answer, or one that retreats to “our results speak for themselves”, tells you something too.
How do you judge the evidence an SEO company offers?
Case studies and testimonials are useful only when they are specific and checkable. Look for a named business, a defined time period, the starting point and the measure used. Ask whether you can speak to the client. Treat anonymous “our client grew 300%” claims as marketing until proven otherwise.
It is also worth asking what the company will not do. A company that refuses poor-fit work, and explains why, tends to be more reliable than one that accepts every enquiry. If a provider cannot show relevant evidence yet, they should say so and offer a smaller first engagement, such as an audit, rather than a long commitment.
What does a fair first engagement look like?
The lowest-risk way to choose between companies is to buy a paid audit from your shortlisted one or two. You receive a real diagnosis of your site, you see how they communicate, and you can take the audit to another company if you decide not to continue. Our pricing page lists the audit as a fixed fee for this reason.
If you would rather not commit even to that, run the free Search & AI Visibility Check on your main pages and bring the results to the conversation. A provider who engages with specifics is a better sign than one who deflects.
How should you read the contract?
Before signing, read the term, the notice period and what happens to the work if you leave. Check the fee does not renew automatically at a higher rate without notice. Make sure the quote’s scope is attached to the contract. Confirm in writing that you own your analytics, Search Console, content and any documentation, and that you can revoke access at any time.
If the agreement is long, ask for a short summary of obligations on both sides. A company confident in its work will not mind. For a deeper checklist on the people side, see how to hire an SEO consultant in South Africa, and for the price side, how much SEO costs in South Africa.
How do you decide?
After the table, the red-flag check and the evidence review, you will usually have a clear leader. Choose the company that is most specific about your site, most honest about limits, clearest on ownership and measurement, and willing to start small. That is rarely the loudest or the cheapest. If two companies are close, pick the one whose communication you trust, because you will be working with them for months.
Frequently asked questions
How many SEO quotes should I get?
Two or three is enough. More than that creates noise without improving the decision. Make sure each provider sees the same information.
Should an SEO company quote include a technical audit?
Yes, either as a separate fixed-fee first step or as the opening phase of a retainer. Without an audit, any plan is a guess.
What if the quotes are very different in price?
Compare scope first. A large gap usually reflects different amounts of work, different ways of earning links, or different levels of senior attention, not different efficiency.
Can I switch SEO companies mid-way?
Yes, if you own your accounts and content. That is why ownership terms matter. Check notice periods before signing.
